Facebook adds fan challenges, custom badges for creators

Facebook is introducing exciting new features aimed at fostering closer connections between fans and their favorite creators. Among these additions are fan challenges and personalized top fan badges. The fan challenges will enable creators to set specific tasks for their followers, who can engage by creating reels or posts in response. To boost interaction, a leaderboard displaying the challenge hashtag will rank submissions based on the number of reactions they receive. These challenges mirror the popular trends seen on short-form video platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels, where users often join informal dance-offs or respond to trending audio clips. Facebook is formalizing this trend by launching dedicated landing pages for individual creators’ challenges. For instance, a cooking influencer might invite fans to share videos showcasing their favorite fall recipes featuring butternut squash. Kalen Allen, a popular creator with 3.6 million followers on Facebook, recently trialed the feature with a challenge that encouraged fans to create videos about their aspirations, resulting in approximately 520 submissions. Meta has reported that fans submitted 1.5 million entries over the past three months while testing this feature. In addition to fan challenges, Facebook is allowing creators to personalize the “top fan” badges displayed next to the names of their most engaged followers. Instead of a generic title, fans can now be recognized with custom monikers, such as “Sheerio” for Ed Sheeran supporters. Other celebrities like Cardi B and J Balvin have also adopted this customization option. While Facebook has traditionally not been viewed as a platform tailored for creators compared to Instagram — which recently celebrated reaching 3 billion monthly active users — these updates signal Meta’s intention to redefine Facebook as a more creator-friendly space. By implementing these features, Meta aims to enhance genuine engagement among users. Recently, Meta announced plans to introduce a Reels-like video feed on its Meta AI app, showcasing exclusively AI-generated content.
