F1: Preseason tests shows how different 2026 will be

In just two weeks, Formula 1 will kick off its season in Australia, and teams are currently engaged in their third and final preseason test in Bahrain. The upcoming 2026 season is set to be a significant departure from recent years, introducing entirely new cars, engines, hybrid systems, and sustainable fuels that promise to alter the competitive landscape dramatically. While preseason testing can provide some insights, it’s important to approach the times recorded with caution. These early runs do not adhere to the strict regulations of the racing season, as teams are free to test various components and configurations. For instance, some cars are showcasing glowing brake discs that were absent in earlier tests—an element we likely won't see during actual races. Moreover, the amount of fuel each car carries can vary, affecting their weight and performance. In the past, teams have been known to run lighter than usual to achieve faster lap times, aiming to impress potential sponsors. As amusingly noted by one online observer, the times posted during these tests can be likened to “a bacon briefcase,” highlighting their limited significance. However, this year's tests are particularly important. After over a decade of utilizing the same hybrid power units, the sport is embracing a completely new design. The internal combustion engine remains a turbocharged 1.6L V6, but it has undergone substantial changes. Notably, the turbocharger no longer incorporates the MGU-H hybrid system that previously captured waste energy and mitigated turbo lag. Instead, the sport now relies on a much more powerful MGU-K hybrid system, which efficiently harvests and deploys energy to the rear wheels. This system is complemented by a new 4 MJ (1.1 kWh) battery pack, enabling the cars to utilize kinetic energy from both braking and the engine, similar to many hybrid vehicles on the road today.
