F1 in China: I’ve never seen so many people in those grandstands

This past weekend, Formula 1 made an exhilarating return to China, just a week after kicking off its 2026 season in Australia. Teams showcased a better understanding of the sport's new, intricate cars at the Shanghai circuit, where the traditional layout enhanced the performance of their hybrid power units. The track's hard braking zones allowed drivers to recharge their batteries effectively without overtaxing engine power. As the teams settled into the competition, a clearer picture of the current standings emerged. The top three teams have established a noticeable gap, while a fierce contest brews in the midfield. However, reliability issues loomed large, as four cars failed to start the race and seven out of a total of 22 were not classified as finishers, leaving fans of those teams disappointed. Despite the challenges, the event in Shanghai provided a thrilling spectacle for motorsport enthusiasts. The city has hosted Formula 1 races since 2004, and the track—designed by Herman Tilke—remains a stunning venue, featuring a picturesque paddock, an expansive grandstand along the start-finish straight, and a layout that creatively mimics the character for "shang." This design includes some challenging turns, particularly the spiraling corners of turns 1 and 2. Notably, this year's event saw an unprecedented turnout, with packed grandstands that had been largely empty for nearly two decades. Lewis Hamilton remarked in the post-race press conference, "This is the biggest crowd I’ve ever seen here in Shanghai. When we were doing the drivers’ parade, we went up to Turn 11, 12, and that grandstand has been closed for almost 20 years, and it was amazing. I was so shocked to see it completely full." The energy from the fans undoubtedly added to the excitement of the race weekend.
