F1 movie review: A fast, cinematic ride but a clumsy script

For fans of Formula 1 and motorsport journalism, the anticipation of seeing F1 come to life on the big screen is exhilarating. Settling into an IMAX seat, the hope is to witness an adrenaline-fueled cinematic adventure. While the racing sequences deliver an exhilarating punch, the film falters significantly in other aspects. Kudos must be given to the filmmakers for their outstanding visual and audio presentation. As an Apple production, expectations ran high, and the film indeed impresses with its breathtaking visuals and immersive sound design. The vibrant imagery, the thunderous roar of the engines, and the carefully choreographed racing moments make one wonder why live F1 events aren't regularly showcased in theaters. Just imagine the excitement of watching Verstappen and Hamilton clash at Silverstone in stunning IMAX clarity. However, the film’s narrative hits a wall. The choice to cast Brad Pitt, who still appears remarkably youthful at 61, as a seasoned driver who can effortlessly compete against much younger opponents like Senna and Schumacher is utterly preposterous. Such a portrayal stretches credibility and undermines the rigorous talent and dedication required in the sport. It feels like a disservice to the athletes who have dedicated their lives to reach the pinnacle of racing. Moreover, the film's representation of female characters takes a backward step, introducing a cringe-worthy romantic subplot for a talented technical director. This undermines her professionalism and goes against the recent efforts to promote women in motorsport, which deserved a more respectful portrayal. Adding to the film's shortcomings is the introduction of an out-of-place villain—a caricatured investor who appears late in the story to create unnecessary conflict. This subplot feels hastily tacked on, resembling something more fitting for a low-budget soap opera. Nevertheless, the film does have its redeeming qualities, including clever nods and Easter eggs for die-hard fans, likely thanks to the involvement of producer Lewis Hamilton. Hans Zimmer’s pulsating score effectively elevates the tension, while the chemistry between Pitt and co-star Damson Idris shines through at times, despite the script’s weaknesses. In conclusion, for dedicated F1 enthusiasts seeking stunning racing visuals, this film offers enough thrills to make it worth the ticket price. However, those looking for an authentic depiction of the sport or a solid storyline may want to reconsider. Enjoy the breathtaking racing scenes and engine roars, but be prepared to ignore the clichés that undermine the film's potential.
