The Subaru Uncharted, set to debut in 2026, is generating buzz for its intriguing design and features that challenge conventional expectations. This new electric vehicle (EV) shares a platform with the Solterra, a collaboration between Subaru and Toyota that dates back to their joint efforts on the FR-S/BRZ/86 in 2012. Joining the family is the Subaru Trailseeker, which promises enhanced power, capability, and a spacious rear canopy, though enthusiasts will have to wait until March 2 for more details on that model. One of the most noteworthy aspects of the Uncharted is its status as the first front-wheel-drive Subaru to be sold in the U.S. since the Impreza transitioned to all-wheel drive back in 1997. This FWD variant boasts an impressive estimated range of 308 miles (496 km), while the Sport AWD version offers a respectable 287 miles (462 km). While Subaru is reportedly collaborating with Panasonic on solid-state batteries for future models, including a potential replacement for the Solterra, that development is still in progress. Is the Uncharted a poor choice for consumers? Not at all. By opting to maintain the Solterra’s 74.7 kWh battery with its 104 cells, Subaru keeps the starting price for the FWD Uncharted at an attractive $34,995. This strategy also helps avoid excessive weight gain, with the Premium FWD model weighing in at only 4,145 lbs (1,880 kg). Upgrading to the AWD version adds less than 300 lbs (136 kg). In terms of charging, the Uncharted is equipped with a NACS charging port, granting access to over 25,000 Tesla Superchargers—a clear indication that Subaru and Toyota are adapting to the evolving market. This relatively lighter weight compared to many other EVs enhances the Uncharted's driving experience, making it feel less cumbersome and more agile. The steering and suspension are designed for ease of handling, and the acceleration performance surpasses that of any internal combustion engine or hybrid in Subaru's lineup. Official estimates suggest a 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) time of just 4.7 seconds, giving this compact crossover a lively edge without becoming overwhelming.
