Mining the deep ocean

Deep beneath the Pacific Ocean lies a treasure trove of critical minerals, with a massive machine resembling a tank scouring the ocean floor at depths exceeding 13,000 feet. This remarkable subsea harvester, weighing over 70 tons, successfully completed a pilot test in 2022, operated by The Metals Company, a Canadian firm. This initial foray into deep-sea mining lasted for just a tenth of a mile, yet it demonstrated the potential of extracting potato-sized nodules rich in copper, manganese, cobalt, and nickel. Currently, The Metals Company is seeking approval to deploy similar machinery across a staggering 65,000 square kilometers of ocean floor, targeting an estimated 600 million metric tons of these valuable nodules. These deposits, composed of tightly packed layers of essential minerals, have remained untouched for eons, but that is rapidly changing. The push towards sustainable operations amid climate change has spurred interest from 31 different initiatives led by various companies, governments, and state-owned entities, including those from China, India, and the tiny island nation of Nauru. As the global shift towards clean energy accelerates, so too does the demand for critical metals and rare earth elements. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) in Paris, this transition could quadruple the need for these resources. However, there is a contentious debate over how to meet this surging demand. Advocates, including The Metals Company, some scientists, and U.S. officials, contend that terrestrial sources of critical minerals are becoming increasingly scarce, and rather than opening new mines on land, the emerging deep-sea mining sector presents a viable alternative to satisfy the world’s growing appetite for essential materials.
