I put Google’s 24/7 AI assistant Gemini Spark to work, and it’s actually pretty useful

Spark efficiently provided a list of items on sale at my local drugstore, including applicable coupons for additional savings. However, an attempt to use one of the suggested promo codes revealed it to be invalid, highlighting a common pitfall of AI assistance. In another instance, I enlisted Spark to help create a packing list for a day trip. While it suggested appropriate items like sunscreen and water, it notably could not integrate with Google Keep, an essential tool for personal productivity. Instead, it offered to create a Google Doc or draft an email, which felt less practical for my needs. Further testing involved finding local summer activities for my teenager. Spark generated a useful list based on location but failed to provide details regarding costs or schedules, necessitating additional manual research. Additionally, I tasked Spark with summarizing my weekly newsletters, which it did effectively, although it returned one article short of my request. As I explored weekend planning, Spark set up a web search to compile local events, revealing an unexpected Annual Beaver Queen Pageant, a quirky local highlight. However, to add events to my calendar, I still had to confirm each addition manually. I also had Spark track price changes for a luxury eye cream. Unfortunately, its approach—checking bi-weekly—seemed insufficient for spotting timely deals. Despite these minor setbacks, I began to envision integrating Spark into my daily routine for tasks such as email monitoring and reminders. While Gemini Spark shows promise in assisting with various tasks, its branding as a standalone product may cause confusion among consumers. Instead, it might be more effective to present Spark as a feature of the broader Gemini ecosystem. The lack of integration with Google Keep and limited functionality outside Google’s services are noteworthy drawbacks that could impact its utility. In conclusion, Gemini Spark holds potential as a personal assistant, yet it needs refinement and broader integration to truly enhance user productivity and ease of use.
