Hands-on with the Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses

At a recent unveiling, Meta introduced its latest creation: the $799 Ray-Ban Display glasses, which come equipped with a unique fuzzy gray wristband that steals the show. This new device marks a significant advancement for Meta as it aims to shift the paradigm of personal technology, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg envisioning a future where glasses and headsets replace smartphones as the primary computing devices. These smart glasses are the first consumers can purchase that feature a built-in display, a notable evolution from last year's prototype Orion glasses, which were designed for demonstration purposes and required an external computing puck. Set to hit the market on September 30 in the U.S., the Ray-Ban Display glasses incorporate a small digital screen in the right lens, offering functionalities such as message previews, photo glimpses, and live captions for conversations. The device is controlled via an EMG sensor wristband that interprets electrical signals from the wearer's body, allowing for gesture-based navigation. Strapping on the wristband feels akin to donning a watch, albeit with a slight electric jolt that activates the device. Once the glasses are on, the translucent display appears just below the right cheek, resembling a miniature smartphone screen. Although the display boasts high resolution, the icons can sometimes become indistinct when viewed against the backdrop of the real world, making the experience more functional than visually striking. Navigating the display proved to be an engaging experience, as I experimented with gestures to access various apps. By clenching my fist and swiping my thumb along my pointer finger, I could scroll through the applications. However, the learning curve was evident as I struggled initially to open the camera app, realizing that my timing and technique needed refinement. The glasses also feature a camera that allows users to preview their shots, reminiscent of a personal picture-in-picture function. However, I found the positioning of the display required constant adjustment of focus, creating a sense of cognitive dissonance as I balanced my attention between the screen and my surroundings. Voice commands can also be utilized to control the Meta Ray-Ban Display, though my attempts to engage the Meta AI assistant for information about nearby artwork were met with mixed results. Nonetheless, the live captions feature proved beneficial, effectively transcribing the guide's voice amidst the event's background music. Among the most captivating aspects of the experience was the wristband, especially while listening to music through Spotify. By mimicking the action of adjusting a volume knob, I found myself delighted by the seamless integration of technology within the glasses. Despite their steep price, the innovative features of the Ray-Ban Display glasses might entice developers looking to create new applications for this emerging platform.
