What fanfic can teach us about cultural evolution

The landscape of creative expression—encompassing television, films, music, and literature—has long been thought to thrive on a delicate balance between originality and familiarity. This idea suggests that what we choose to engage with shapes cultural evolution. However, recent findings challenge this conventional belief. Research published in the journal Humanities and Social Sciences Communications reveals that fans of online fan fiction tend to gravitate towards familiar narratives rather than seeking out new experiences. Despite this preference for the known, readers report a higher level of satisfaction when they venture into unfamiliar territory. This leads to a compelling conclusion: while familiarity draws fans in, it is novelty that captivates them. Historically, the act of reimagining characters and plots is nothing new—great literary figures like William Shakespeare often borrowed from existing stories. However, the introduction of copyright laws complicated creative adaptations. The modern interpretation of fan fiction began to take shape with the 1967 release of the first Star Trek fanzine, Spockanalia, which featured original stories inspired by the series. This beloved franchise also gave rise to slash fiction, where writers explored romantic relationships between characters such as Kirk and Spock. With the rise of the World Wide Web, fan fiction found a broader audience, evolving from Usenet groups and mailing lists to expansive online archives where creators could share their work and engage with readers. Today, fan fiction encompasses a vast array of genres and franchises, from Sherlock Holmes to The X-Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Game of Thrones, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Harry Potter. Whatever the source material, there is likely a fanfic adaptation waiting to be discovered.
