The COVID-19 pandemic sparked a surge in interest for mushroom foraging, as many turned to nature for solace and sustenance. During this period, a researcher set out to study the wild fungi of central Pennsylvania, an area rich in mushroom diversity. As travel plans were halted, the opportunity to delve into local ecosystems arose. In collaboration with Eric Burkhart from Penn State, the researcher embarked on a detailed examination of the various mushroom species harvested in the region. While foraging has been a tradition in Pennsylvania for generations, this initiative aimed to document the range of mushrooms collected and their uses, which had not been formally studied until now. Between 2022 and 2023, a comprehensive survey was conducted to uncover the types of mushrooms most sought after by local foragers. Findings revealed that while morels, chicken of the woods, and chanterelles were the most commonly collected mushrooms, a stunning 160 species were reported by over 800 participants. The primary reasons for foraging were food and medicinal purposes, showcasing the deep-rooted community practices surrounding these wild harvests. Many foragers utilized social media platforms to share their experiences, photos, and even DNA sequencing results of various mushrooms, fostering a collaborative knowledge-sharing environment. The results of this extensive study are set to be published in the journal Economic Botany in October 2025, highlighting the vital role of community, sustainability, and the rich biodiversity of mushrooms in the mid-Atlantic region. Through mushroom clubs and festivals, connections were formed, emphasizing the importance of preserving these foraging traditions for future generations.
