Black holes have fascinated both the scientific community and the public for decades. Once relegated to the realm of speculation, these enigmatic phenomena have inspired a myriad of artists worldwide. A remarkable collection of this artistic expression is showcased in "Conjuring the Void: The Art of Black Holes." Author Lynn Gamwell, who previously served as the director of the New York Academy of Science’s Gallery of Art and Science, brings her extensive expertise in the intersection of mathematics, art, and science to this work. Her involvement with the annual conference of Harvard’s Black Hole Initiative several years ago sparked the idea for the book. During her presentation, Gamwell expressed her astonishment at the vast amount of art centered around black holes, particularly noting the connections to Asian artistic traditions. "There’s just something about the concept of a black hole that resonates with Eastern philosophies," Gamwell stated. Themes of void, nothingness, and the inescapable nature of existence align closely with Buddhist and Taoist beliefs. The book opens with a chronological overview of significant milestones in black hole research, tracing back to Isaac Newton and John Mitchell’s 1783 idea of "dark stars." It delves into how Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity shaped our understanding, culminating in groundbreaking discoveries like the LIGO collaboration’s detection of gravitational waves in 2016 and the Event Horizon Telescope’s first image of a black hole in 2019. This scientific narrative sets the stage for showcasing the diverse array of art inspired by black holes, ranging from early 20th-century illustrations to cutting-edge contemporary works.
