How far does $5,000 go when you want an electric car?

Recently, the conversation around used electric vehicles (EVs) has gained traction. It's well-known that EVs tend to lose value more quickly than traditional gasoline-powered cars. This depreciation is influenced by various factors, including tax incentives and manufacturer rebates that primarily benefit the first owner. When considering a second-hand purchase, these initial perks are already accounted for. Concerns about battery life and the potential costs of replacement packs often loom large for prospective buyers. While newer technology continually enhances battery performance, older models may fall behind, making them less appealing. Additionally, common worries about charging availability and performance in colder conditions persist. However, for the three-quarters of American car buyers who opt for used vehicles, this depreciation can present an opportunity. Many expensive EVs are now available at significantly lower prices, but for those looking to spend only $5,000 or less, there are still viable options. It’s important to manage expectations regarding range, as a $5,000 EV is unlikely to be suitable for long road trips. Nevertheless, for most drivers who average less than 40 miles per day, a budget-friendly EV can be a practical choice, especially in urban settings where they excel in stop-and-go traffic without consuming fuel. Before making a purchase, ensure you have a dependable charging solution at home. These lower-cost EV models typically come with smaller batteries, making a standard 120 V AC level 1 charger a suitable option. However, they won't be able to utilize the advanced charging systems offered by companies like Electrify America or Tesla, which diminishes the relevance of rapid public charging infrastructure for these vehicles.
