Here are five ways you could build a Slate EV, from $25,000 to $37,000

This morning, Slate Auto unveiled the pricing details for its highly anticipated Slate electric truck. Later today, Ars will get a closer look at a prototype and hopefully address some lingering inquiries. In the meantime, we delved into Slate’s online configurator to discover the potential costs associated with this innovative electric vehicle. As anticipated, Slate has introduced a starting price that falls below $25,000. Specifically, the Blank Slate pickup is priced at $24,950, excluding taxes and potential delivery fees. The vehicle is equipped with a lithium iron phosphate battery pack, offering 63 kWh of usable energy and a gross capacity of 65 kWh. Powered by a 181 horsepower (135 kW) electric motor, it delivers 195 lb-ft (264 Nm) of torque to the rear wheels. In its pickup form, featuring 17-inch steel wheels, it boasts an EPA-estimated range of 205 miles (330 km). For charging, the vehicle supports DC fast charging, allowing it to recharge from 20% to 80% in just 30 minutes at a rate of up to 120 kW via a NACS port. Alternatively, it can take between four to 17 hours using AC charging, depending on whether you opt for a level 2 charger or a standard wall outlet. If you're looking for a minimalist pickup, the configurator allows for a basic setup starting at $25,289.97, plus applicable taxes and fees. This price includes a few aesthetic upgrades, such as decals, which add a personal touch reminiscent of your favorite sneakers. The configurator provides helpful icons indicating the difficulty of installing each component, the necessary tools, and estimated installation time. For certain features, like wraps, Slate advises seeking professional assistance if you're uncertain about a DIY approach. Traditionally, many view pickup trucks primarily as work vehicles, designed to transport tools and materials to job sites. A practical, straightforward design is available for those needing a basic work truck, with options still under $30,000. One configuration I created came to $28,594, showcasing that affordability and functionality can go hand in hand.
