What smart people in economics and business are saying about a viral report warning of an AI-driven recession and stock crash

A recent research note has ignited fears among investors by suggesting that the surge in artificial intelligence could lead to a recession and a significant stock market downturn. This analysis, released by Citrini Research, envisions a troubling scenario for 2028 where rapid AI integration results in widespread layoffs in white-collar jobs and a sharp decline in consumer spending. The report gained considerable traction online, sparking intense discussions about the potential consequences of AI advancements. Claudia Sahm, the chief economist at New Century Advisors and the architect of the Sahm Rule recession indicator, expressed reservations about the report's framing. On social media platform X, she articulated that the focus on destructive outcomes is concerning. "One concern with the Citrini scenario is the emphasis on negative impacts rather than constructive ones," Sahm noted, suggesting that while constructive changes may take longer to manifest, they are equally important for establishing a new equilibrium. In her follow-up remarks, she emphasized that a labor market disruption on the scale described by Citrini would likely provoke a robust policy response, which she believes the report underestimates. "The labor market crisis they depict would lead to a strong fiscal and monetary reaction," Sahm stated, cautioning that the more probable scenario involves gradual, limited job losses that may struggle to capture policymakers' attention. Investor Michael Burry, renowned for predicting the 2008 housing market collapse and featured in "The Big Short," shared the report with his extensive follower base, highlighting its alarming predictions. Burry remarked on X, "And you think I'm bearish," linking directly to Citrini's analysis and including a chart that illustrates the 'AI Feedback Loop'—a cycle the report argues lacks a natural self-correction mechanism, unlike traditional economic downturns. Brendan Duke, a senior director at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities and former advisor in the Biden-Harris administration, noted that some critics are misunderstanding the nature of Citrini's thought experiment. He acknowledged a significant risk within the scenario: the potential financial implications if traditionally reliable white-collar borrowers begin to default due to extensive layoffs, which could lead to stress in mortgage and private credit markets. Jeff Dorman, chief investment officer at Arca, remarked on the public's reaction to the report, suggesting that the hype surrounding it serves as a commentary on investor psychology. "The virality of this report highlights that fear is a marketable commodity," he stated, indicating that dramatic predictions tend to attract more attention than they deserve, even if they seldom come to fruition. Deepak Shenoy, founder of Capitalmind, drew parallels between the current AI recession fears and past warnings about resource scarcity, such as the 2008 predictions about dwindling oil reserves. He argued that while such alarms can be captivating, they often lack substance. "Doomsday scenarios are engaging but often exaggerated," Shenoy concluded, likening the current AI crisis narrative to entertainment rather than reality.
