Meteorologists are predicting a hurricane season marked by below-average activity, set to commence on June 1. The National Weather Service forecasts between eight to fourteen named storms, which include three to six hurricanes and one to three major hurricanes classified as category 3, 4, or 5, with winds reaching 111 mph or more. In contrast, an average season typically sees about fourteen named storms, comprising seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes. The hurricane season will officially conclude on November 30. Ken Graham, director of the National Weather Service, emphasized the importance of preparedness, stating, "It just takes one. Now is the time to start thinking about your hurricane preparedness." The forecasts are influenced by the anticipated development of an El Niño phenomenon during the season. El Niño is known for its impact on global weather patterns, initiated by unusually warm waters in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. While this phenomenon can lead to an increase in hurricanes in the Pacific, it often results in reduced storm activity in the Atlantic due to increased wind shear that can disrupt storm formation. However, the National Weather Service warns that elevated water temperatures in the Atlantic could contribute to the rapid intensification of any storms that do form. This trend has been increasingly observed as climate change continues to warm the oceans. Marc Alessi, a science fellow at the Union for Concerned Scientists, noted, "When your ocean temperatures are warmer, you get more intense hurricanes to develop. So if there is an opportunity and a location for low wind shear and warm ocean temperatures, that is when you can get a very strong hurricane to form."
