Chris Degnan, a former chief revenue officer at Snowflake, is casting doubt on one of the most sought-after positions in the tech industry today: the forward-deployed engineer (FDE). This role, made popular by Palantir, involves engineers being embedded within client companies, where they not only build technology but also assist in its implementation. In a recent appearance on the "20VC" podcast, Degnan, who has transitioned to an investor and startup advisor after over 11 years at Snowflake, shed light on the complexities of staffing for FDE positions. He described the role as akin to a "glorified professional services person," suggesting that highly skilled engineers might prefer to focus on core product development rather than client-facing tasks. Degnan pointed out significant issues that arise from the FDE model, including the technical debt left behind once the engineers depart. "If you're a really good engineer, you do not want to be a forward-deployed engineer. You want to work on the core product," he asserted. The core concern is that after FDEs have completed their work, the onus falls on the customer to manage and maintain the technology, which could lead to substantial risks. Despite these warnings, the demand for FDEs is skyrocketing, particularly in the context of the AI boom. Data from Indeed indicates that job postings for FDEs surged by an astonishing 5,230% in April 2026 compared to January 2025, equating to a year-over-year increase of approximately 729%. Major tech players are entering the fray, with OpenAI launching the OpenAI Deployment Company, which has been backed by an initial investment exceeding $4 billion. Google has also announced a new AI division focused on FDEs. Additionally, companies like Stripe are adopting this model internally, as evidenced by their recent job listing for a "Forward Deployed AI Accelerator" within their marketing team. While many tout the FDE position as the "hottest role in AI," Degnan remains skeptical, emphasizing that the forward-deployed engineer cannot hold a candle to core engineers who build foundational products.
