The Specialized Turbo Vado SL 2 6.0 Carbon defies expectations in two notable ways: its featherlight feel as an electric bike, even with the battery removed, and the challenge of reciting its lengthy name to fellow cyclists at traffic stops. After testing a variety of e-bikes, including this one, during rides of approximately 30 miles with my usual cycling group, I found that I often attempt to ride without assistance. Typically, I abandon this effort after a mile or two, as many e-bikes aren’t built for rides without power. However, the Carbon stands out, allowing for a satisfying unassisted ride. Weighing in at 35 pounds, it may not be a minimalist road bike, but it certainly feels lighter than expected. My regular bike, which has an aluminum frame and an internal geared hub, is around the same weight, so I might be a bit biased. It is impressive to experience an e-bike that excels in both unpowered and powered modes. Once the assistance is activated, the Carbon truly shines. Assessing whether this bike aligns with your cycling ambitions is more complex than simply enjoying the ride itself. Its distinctive features make it challenging to compare with other e-bikes, as it utilizes a range of unique components not typically found in the market. The 320-watt mid-drive motor, control system, handlebar display, charge ports, and software are all proprietary to Specialized. Unlike most e-bikes that allow for adjustments to settings or features through controls or apps, the Carbon operates with its lights permanently on, a design likely influenced by European regulations.
