NeuralDSP models John Mayer’s entire amp and effects rig—and it sounds great

Guitarists today have an abundance of options when it comes to computer-based amp modeling software, and for many, the appeal lies in convenience. As a user myself, I appreciate avoiding the bulk, weight, and expense of traditional amplifier setups, which often come with a maze of pedals and cables. When it comes to achieving clean to mid-gain tones, the market is flooded with impressive choices. Notable among them are NeuralDSP's Tone King, Cory Wong, and Mateus Asato, along with Polychrome DSP's Lumos and Universal Audio's recent Paradise Guitar Studio. Each of these platforms offers unique functionalities while delivering studio-quality tones that closely emulate the high-end hardware they replicate. However, the question remains: do we really need yet another amp simulation package? NeuralDSP believes so, having recently launched Archetype: John Mayer X. This new release doesn’t just simulate Mayer's style but faithfully recreates his actual hardware and the specific settings he utilizes in both studio and live performances. Additionally, the software features presets that Mayer himself designed, making it an exciting tool for those looking to capture his sound. To see what this software offers beyond the scope of reproducing Mayer’s iconic tracks like "Continuum," I spent several hours exploring Mayer X. I was pleasantly surprised. While NeuralDSP has gained a reputation for its metal-focused amp simulations, Mayer X introduces a refreshing variety by modeling three of John Mayer's amplifiers: a 1964 Fender Vibroverb, a Dumble Steel String Singer #002, and a prototype Two-Rock that has yet to hit the market. Each amplifier is complemented by its corresponding speaker cabinet, allowing users to position one or two microphones freely, enabling fine-tuning of the recorded sound and room ambiance.
