Nearly half of xAI’s founding team has now left the company

In a significant turn of events, Yuhuai (Tony) Wu, co-founder of xAI, announced his departure from the company late Monday. In a post on X, he expressed, "It’s time for my next chapter," highlighting a new era filled with potential where small teams empowered by AI can achieve remarkable feats. However, Wu's exit is part of a concerning trend for xAI, as five out of the 12 original founding members have now left the organization. This shift has intensified over the past year, with four of those departures occurring recently. Notable exits include Kyle Kosic, who transitioned to OpenAI in mid-2024, and Google veteran Christian Szegedy, who left in February 2025. Additionally, Igor Babushkin departed last August to establish a venture firm, and just last month, Greg Yang, a former Microsoft employee, also exited, citing health concerns. While all departures have reportedly been amicable, there are various factors at play. Elon Musk's leadership style is well-known for its demands, and with the recent completion of SpaceX's acquisition of xAI and an impending IPO, there are many opportunities for the team members to explore new ventures. The current climate is favorable for fundraising in the AI sector, naturally enticing top-tier researchers to embark on their own projects. Nonetheless, challenges remain. The company’s flagship product, the Grok chatbot, has been plagued by erratic behavior and possible internal issues, which could create tensions within the technical team. Moreover, recent modifications to xAI's image-generation tools resulted in the proliferation of deepfake pornography, leading to legal complications that could further strain the company. The impact of these departures raises concerns about xAI's future. With an IPO approaching, the scrutiny on the company will increase significantly. Musk is also initiating ambitious plans for orbital data centers, amplifying the pressure to deliver results. The rapid evolution of AI models means that if Grok fails to keep up with competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic, the upcoming IPO could be adversely affected. With so much at stake, it’s crucial for xAI to retain its talent and address the challenges ahead.
