Elon Musk's xAI loses second cofounder in 48 hours

In a surprising turn of events, Jimmy Ba, a cofounder of xAI, announced his departure from the company on Tuesday. He took to social media platform X to express his need for a shift in focus, stating, "It's time to recalibrate my gradient on the big picture. 2026 is gonna be insane and likely the busiest (and most consequential) year for the future of our species." Ba, who had been a key player in xAI, reported directly to Elon Musk and previously managed significant portions of the startup's operations. Ba's exit marks the second departure from xAI in just 48 hours, as Tony Wu, another cofounder, had announced his resignation the previous evening. Reports indicate that Wu's Slack account was disabled shortly before he made his announcement, suggesting a swift organizational shift. This restructuring resulted in Wu's responsibilities being redistributed to Guodong Zhang, another cofounder. Having joined xAI in 2023 alongside eleven other founders, Ba is the sixth cofounder to leave the venture, with five of those resignations occurring within the last year. Before his resignation, Ba led a team responsible for overseeing a significant number of AI tutors, a role that was transferred to Diego Pasini last September. In addition to his role at xAI, Ba is also an assistant professor in the computer science department at the University of Toronto, where he earned his Ph.D. under the guidance of Geoffrey Hinton, a notable figure in AI research. Musk established xAI to provide an alternative to what he perceives as overly progressive chatbots, contrasting it with platforms like OpenAI's ChatGPT. xAI has gained attention for its bold initiatives, including the launch of a striking digital avatar named "Ani" and its Grok chatbot, which recently faced criticism for generating inappropriate content. In light of this backlash, the company has since restricted Grok's image generation capabilities. Furthermore, Musk recently announced plans for xAI to merge with SpaceX, and the company is reportedly preparing for an initial public offering potentially valuing SpaceX at $1.5 trillion. As xAI navigates these tumultuous changes, both Ba and the company have not yet responded to requests for comments on this developing situation.
