ChatGPT co-creator wanted to leave Meta days after quittng OpenAI

In a surprising turn of events at Meta, CEO Mark Zuckerberg's ambitious strategy to establish a Superintelligence division has encountered significant challenges. The initiative, aimed at attracting top researchers from the likes of OpenAI, Google, and Apple, initially saw a flurry of high-profile hires. However, just weeks after its inception, the company is witnessing an exodus of key talent. Among those departing is Ethan Knight, a machine learning scientist who joined only a short time ago. Additionally, Avi Verma, a former researcher from OpenAI, opted not to begin his role at Meta after completing the onboarding process. Rishabh Agarwal, another research scientist, announced his exit merely five months into his tenure, citing a desire to explore different opportunities despite the enticing proposals from Zuckerberg and Superintelligence head Alexandr Wang. Long-term employees in generative AI, such as Chaya Nayak and Loredana Crisan, have also opted to leave, underscoring a broader trend of dissatisfaction among newly recruited staff. The most notable departure involves Shengjia Zhao, a co-creator of ChatGPT, who reportedly sought to return to OpenAI just days after joining Meta. Despite being appointed as Meta's Chief AI Scientist in a move celebrated by Zuckerberg on Threads, Zhao's brief stint raised eyebrows. Reports indicate that many recent hires are struggling with Wang's leadership approach, which lacks extensive experience in managing large teams in a tech giant. Frustrations are also growing over internal competition for critical resources and bureaucratic hurdles within the organization. This shift in Meta’s AI landscape raises questions about the company’s ability to retain talent amidst its ambitious goals.
