Former Y Combinator, a16z experts hold invite-only summit for founders

On August 9, an exclusive gathering known as the To Do List Summit is set to take place, organized by former leaders of Y Combinator's events and public relations, alongside a past social media manager from Andreessen Horowitz. This invite-only event will host 80 early-stage founders, focusing on equipping them with vital skills to navigate the press and manage their social media presence effectively. The cost to attend is $600. This initiative follows significant layoffs at Y Combinator, which occurred in two waves—one last year and a larger one in 2023—moving many to express surprise given the popularity of YC's events that played a crucial role in establishing San Francisco as a center for the thriving AI startup ecosystem. Notably, OpenAI, closely associated with Y Combinator and led by former YC president Sam Altman, is at the heart of this community. The motivation behind this summit stems from a desire to combat the misconception that early-stage startups must spend exorbitant amounts on public relations and social media agencies. According to an insider, many founders feel undue pressure to replicate the viral success of startups like Cluely. In the current digital landscape, a single impactful social media post can indeed propel a fledgling company into the spotlight. For instance, the founders of the coding app startup Rork went from near bankruptcy to securing $2.8 million in funding after a viral tweet, while defense tech startup Theseus gained a contract with the U.S. Special Forces and $4.3 million in funding following a viral post on X. The organizers of the summit believe that by sharing their expertise, they can assist not only those within the YC network but also other founders looking to thrive without sacrificing equity or incurring significant costs.
