For those who have been longing for a fresh start with their Gmail address, there’s promising news on the horizon. Google is reportedly in the process of rolling out a feature that will allow users to change their Gmail address without the hassle of losing access to their existing emails and files. This development was first highlighted by the Google Pixel Hub community on Telegram and later covered by 9to5Google. According to a Hindi version of the Gmail support website, Google will enable users to switch from their current Gmail address to a new one ending in @gmail.com. Notably, even after making the change, your previous Gmail address will continue to function as an alias, allowing you to log into Google services using either the new or the old address. However, it’s important for users to be aware of a key limitation: once the change is made, you won’t be able to create any additional Gmail addresses linked to your account for a period of 12 months. As of now, the English version of the support site still mentions that changing an email address that ends with @gmail.com is typically not permitted. Instead, it suggests either changing the name associated with the account or creating a new Gmail address and manually transferring emails and contacts. This potential update could bring significant relief to users who have felt stuck with their current email addresses, allowing for greater flexibility in managing their online identities.
