Ex-DVD company employee gets 4 years for leaking Spider-Man Blu-ray

A former employee of a global DVD distribution company has been handed a four-year prison sentence for orchestrating a scheme that involved stealing and leaking numerous pre-release DVDs and Blu-rays. The Department of Justice announced this verdict on Thursday, revealing that Steven Hale admitted to his crimes back in May. Between 2021 and 2022, Hale spent approximately a year pilfering discs from his workplace and subsequently selling them through various online platforms. Among the high-profile films that fell victim to his actions were much-anticipated titles such as 'Dune' and sequels from well-known franchises like 'F9: The Fast Saga' and 'Venom: Let There Be Carnage.' However, Hale's most significant impact stemmed from his illegal distribution of advance copies of 'Spider-Man: No Way Home.' Released in theaters exclusively in 2021, this blockbuster became the first film to achieve over $1 billion at the box office after the onset of the COVID pandemic. The demand for DVDs was expected to soar, especially among viewers hesitant to return to cinemas. Unfortunately, this led to rampant DVD leaks, which attracted the attention of cybercriminals. Reports indicated that scammers began embedding malware in illegal copies of the film to exploit unsuspecting downloaders. In this context, Hale circumvented Digital Rights Management (DRM) protections meant to prevent copying, managing to rip 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' from the Blu-ray and sell this high-quality version online more than a month prior to its legal release. The DOJ highlighted the severity of the situation, stating that Hale's DVD rip was downloaded tens of millions of times, resulting in an estimated loss of tens of millions of dollars for the film's copyright holders.
