Former L3Harris Trenchant boss jailed for selling hacking tools to Russian broker

Peter Williams, a former executive at a U.S. defense contractor, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for unlawfully selling hacking and surveillance technologies to a Russian intermediary. This verdict was reported by Bloomberg and Cyberscoop shortly after the sentencing on Tuesday. At 39 years old, Williams served as the general manager of Trenchant, a division of L3Harris that provides hacking and surveillance tools—often referred to as zero-days—to the U.S. government and its key allies, which include Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, collectively known as the Five Eyes. Last year, the Australian national residing in Washington, D.C., pleaded guilty to the sale of seven trade secrets from Trenchant to a Russian broker. While the name of the broker was initially undisclosed, the U.S. Treasury Department confirmed on Tuesday that it is linked to Operation Zero, which has since faced sanctions. Operation Zero is known for offering substantial financial rewards for information about security flaws in popular operating systems like Android and iOS, as well as messaging platforms such as Telegram. The organization claims to resell the acquired tools exclusively to the Russian government and its domestic firms. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the hacking tools sold by Williams had the potential to compromise millions of computers and devices globally. Williams, who has a background working with an Australian intelligence agency and military, acknowledged that he earned approximately $1.3 million in cryptocurrency from these sales between 2022 and 2025. As of now, neither L3Harris nor Williams' legal representatives have provided comments on the situation.
