A startup, Everand, is now bundling ebooks, audiobooks, and book clubs in challenge to Amazon

Everand is shaking up the digital reading landscape with an innovative subscription service that combines ebooks, audiobooks, and book clubs into one seamless offering. Introduced on Tuesday, this new plan merges Everand’s extensive library of over 1.5 million titles with the social reading app Fable, acquired by Everand in 2025. This strategic move directly aims to take on Amazon’s stronghold in the digital reading market. The new subscription is designed for the 5 million readers using both apps, granting access to a rich library of audiobooks and ebooks alongside nearly 200,000 online book clubs available through Fable. This integration allows users to sync their reading and listening activity between the two platforms effortlessly. Starting at $11.99 per month for one book, the subscription offers additional tiers at $16.99 for three titles and $28.99 for five, making it a competitive alternative to Audible Premium Plus, which costs $14.95 per month for a single audiobook credit. With its bundled approach, Everand hopes to carve out a niche in the market, challenging Amazon's extensive ecosystem that includes Audible, Kindle, and Goodreads. This initiative exemplifies a strategic acquisition aimed at enhancing user engagement and creating a more compelling service, much like Amazon's own growth strategy over the years. Fable’s vast database of over 100 million ratings and reviews can now be utilized to elevate the Everand experience, allowing readers to join communities related to their current reads. Last year alone, around 820,000 users on Fable joined new clubs, illustrating the platform's growing popularity. In addition to the subscription, Fable Plus is included, featuring advanced reading statistics, personalized reading goals, and an ad-free experience. Everand isn't the only player eyeing Amazon’s territory; Spotify has also launched its own audiobooks service, which intriguingly includes physical books, offering a 'page match' feature to bridge the gap between formats. Everand is tapping into a timely trend as more readers, especially Gen Z, are driven by the desire for community engagement around their reading choices. This shift towards social interaction around books is further supported by Fable’s features like tracking systems, goal setting, and discussion forums. However, the market is increasingly crowded with various reading companion apps, such as Hardcover and Storygraph, leading to tough competition. Recently, Tome announced its closure due to the excess competition. Besides the U.S. subscription launch, Everand is also rolling out its subscription tiers globally, with updated policies allowing unused credits to carry over for up to six months, enhancing flexibility for subscribers.
