How a data processing problem at Lyft became the basis for Eventual

In an age where artificial intelligence is rapidly evolving, the founders of Eventual, Sammy Sidhu and Jay Chia, identified a critical issue while working in Lyft’s autonomous vehicle division. They observed a significant challenge in data infrastructure that was only set to worsen as the demand for AI grew. Self-driving vehicles generate vast amounts of unstructured data, ranging from 3D imagery to audio and text, yet there was no unified tool capable of concurrently processing these diverse data types. This gap left engineers to rely on a patchwork of open-source solutions that often proved unreliable and time-consuming. Sidhu, now CEO of Eventual, recounted how highly skilled professionals in the autonomous vehicle field were spending nearly 80% of their time grappling with data infrastructure issues instead of focusing on the core applications. To address this need, Sidhu and Chia developed an internal multimodal data processing tool while at Lyft. However, it was during Sidhu's job search that he realized there was a broader demand for a similar solution across various industries, leading to the inception of Eventual. Founded in early 2022, Eventual introduced a Python-native open-source data processing engine called Daft. This innovative tool is designed to swiftly handle a variety of data types, including text, audio, and video, with the ambition of transforming unstructured data processing in a manner akin to how SQL revolutionized tabular datasets. Initially launched shortly before the ChatGPT phenomenon, Daft has gained traction as more businesses began to recognize the need for robust data infrastructure. The scope of Daft extends beyond just autonomous vehicles; it serves multiple sectors that deal with multimodal data, such as robotics, retail technology, and healthcare. Notable customers now include Amazon, CloudKitchens, and Together AI. Eventual has successfully secured funding in two rounds within just eight months; first, a $7.5 million seed round led by CRV, followed by a $20 million Series A round spearheaded by Felicis, with contributions from Microsoft’s M12 and Citi. This funding will be utilized to enhance Eventual's open-source offerings and develop commercial products that empower clients to build AI applications from processed data. Astasia Myers, a partner at Felicis, highlighted Eventual's position as a pioneer in the data infrastructure space, particularly as the multimodal AI market is projected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 35% from 2023 to 2028. With the staggering increase in data generation—1,000 times larger in the last two decades and 90% of the world's data created in just the past two years—Myers emphasized the urgency for a multimodal-native data processing solution like Daft. As generative AI continues to evolve across text, images, videos, and voice, the need for effective data processing engines has never been more critical.
