Smart glasses maker Even Realities hits $1B valuation with $150M funding led by Meituan, Tencent

Even Realities, a startup based in Shenzhen, has made waves in the smart glasses market by securing $150 million in a pre-Series B funding round led by Meituan and supported by Tencent. This significant investment has propelled the company's valuation to an impressive $1 billion, highlighting its rapid growth since its inception just three years ago. Founded by former Apple engineers, including CEO Will Wang, Even Realities is distinguishing itself in a crowded market dominated by major players like Meta and Snap. While competitors are focused on integrating cameras and AI into their devices, Even is prioritizing a display-first approach. Their glasses aim to project information directly into the user's line of sight while maintaining privacy. The startup's flagship product, the G1, launched in 2024 and quickly exceeded sales expectations, becoming the first in its category to sell over 10,000 units. The company's workforce has surged from 30-40 employees to between 300 and 400 in just a year. Last November, Even introduced its second model, the G2, which notably lacks a camera. Instead, it features a heads-up display that provides information to users, controlled by a companion ring device, the Even R1. This design choice aligns with Even's commitment to privacy, as CEO Wang emphasizes the importance of ensuring comfort for both the wearer and those around them. Even's technology emphasizes optics, with a proprietary system called Even HAO—Holistic Adaptive Optics—integrating microchips, waveguides, and prescription support from the design phase. This innovation sets Even apart from traditional consumer electronics that rely on standard display technologies. While the company has yet to sell in China, it is actively catering to markets in the U.S., Japan, South Korea, the Middle East, and Europe, with the U.S. being its fastest-growing market. Despite a premium price tag of around $599 for the frames, plus additional costs for prescription lenses and accessories, Even is successfully attracting a demographic of male professionals aged 30 to 50, with a significant portion being executives. As the demand for smart glasses continues to rise, Even Realities is poised to make a significant impact in the industry, emphasizing user privacy and innovative optical technology.
