AI frenzy sees these European stocks gain over 100% this year in blockbuster rally

The AI investment wave, predominantly led by U.S. and Chinese companies, is now giving rise to a notable rally in select European tech stocks. Investors are increasingly directing their funds toward firms that are essential for the infrastructure driving artificial intelligence. Aixtron, a company specializing in chipmaking equipment, has seen its stock price soar by an impressive 189% this year. Similarly, Technoprobe, which provides equipment for chip production, has experienced a 129% increase, and STMicroelectronics has risen by 133% in 2026. Nokia, previously known for its mobile phones, has pivoted to focus on AI, resulting in a remarkable 108% stock price increase this year. Despite the dominance of U.S. and Chinese firms in the AI landscape, investors are turning their attention to European companies viewed as crucial to AI development. According to Fabio Bassi, head of cross-asset strategy at J.P. Morgan, the limited availability of large, liquid AI-focused companies in Europe is driving investment towards a select group of firms perceived as AI proxies. Aixtron, which specializes in applying ultra-thin layers of materials onto silicon wafers, has seen its stock surge by over 300% in the past year, making it the second-largest gainer on the Stoxx 600 index, just behind pharmaceutical company Abivax. Citi has significantly raised Aixtron's target price by more than 66%, citing heightened demand and improved profit margins linked to AI. STMicroelectronics is capitalizing on the AI trend through its production of power semiconductors, crucial for the ongoing transition to more efficient 800-volt systems, as well as optical products that enhance data center connectivity. Brian Colello, a senior equity analyst at Morningstar, points out that the semiconductor demand driven by AI is beneficial for STMicroelectronics and its competitors. Nokia is redefining its role in the tech sector by providing essential hardware for AI infrastructure, notably through its acquisition of Infinera, which positions it as a leading vendor of optical networking equipment. Following Nvidia's announcement of a $1 billion share purchase in Nokia, the company's stock surged by 22%. Technoprobe, based in Italy, produces probe cards essential for testing silicon wafers. The Bank of America recently upgraded its rating to 'buy', predicting significant earnings growth due to increasing demand associated with graphics processing units (GPUs). The Stoxx Europe Total Market Semiconductor index has risen 84% this year, contrasting sharply with a mere 3% increase in the broader Stoxx 600 index. While companies supplying AI infrastructure are currently reaping the benefits, it is anticipated that those deploying AI technologies in various sectors, including software and healthcare, will also begin to see substantial gains in the future. However, analysts caution that the surge in a few European stocks does not necessarily indicate a broader revival of the region's AI sector. Regulatory challenges in Europe, such as power grid limitations and compliance with the EU AI Act, are likely to slow the rollout of AI infrastructure. Martin Szumski, an equity analyst at Morningstar, emphasizes that the European landscape for AI will be shaped by a different regulatory framework compared to the U.S., making it more challenging for companies to establish large-scale AI data centers. Thus, while select European stocks are experiencing a rally, it remains uncertain whether this trend signals a sustainable growth trajectory for the region's tech sector as a whole. Bassi notes that the current investment climate reflects a narrow focus on specific companies with genuine potential for data center expansion, rather than a widespread tech renaissance in Europe.
