European leaders are starting to rethink their reliance on U.S. technology and services, as highlighted in a recent report from The New York Times. This shift in perspective follows President Donald Trump's decision to impose sanctions on Karim Khan, the chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Court (ICC), after the ICC issued arrest warrants for Israeli leaders including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In a significant move, Microsoft responded to the sanctions by disabling Khan’s email account, which has led to considerable concern among European officials. Casper Klynge, a former diplomat and ex-Microsoft employee, described this action as a pivotal moment, calling it the 'smoking gun' that prompted many in Europe to seek alternative technology providers. Reports indicate that some ICC staff members have already migrated to Swiss-based email service Proton, highlighting a growing trend. Klynge further elaborated on the implications of U.S. actions, expressing that there is a widespread fear that American companies might feel compelled to comply with U.S. government directives against certain entities or individuals. In response to these concerns, Microsoft has announced policy modifications aimed at safeguarding customer accounts under similar circumstances. The tech giant also emphasized that it had not disabled the email accounts of four ICC judges who were sanctioned earlier this month. In a bid to reassure its European clientele, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently unveiled new 'sovereign solutions' designed to enhance the security of European institutions, signaling a move towards more localized data protection approaches.
