BRUSSELS (AP) — In a significant move to bolster airspace security, representatives from several European nations sharing borders with Russia and Ukraine convened on Friday to discuss the creation of a 'drone wall.' This initiative aims to address vulnerabilities in defense systems following a series of airspace violations. Countries including Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland have been actively collaborating on the drone wall project. However, their joint request for financial support from the European Union’s executive body was denied back in March. Since then, the integrity of Europe’s borders has been increasingly challenged by unauthorized drone activities. While Russia has been implicated in many of these incidents, it denies any deliberate involvement or wrongdoing. A notable event occurred on September 10, when NATO fighters were deployed to intercept several Russian drones that had entered Polish airspace, highlighting the costly implications of a relatively low-cost threat. Furthermore, Danish airports faced temporary closures this week due to drone activity in their vicinity. Leading the discussions on Friday was EU Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius, with the meeting conducted via video link. Participants included representatives from Bulgaria, Denmark, Romania, and Slovakia, as well as officials from Ukraine and NATO. The primary goal of the talks was to assess the existing drone countermeasures, identify additional needs, and explore potential EU funding sources to enhance defenses along NATO's eastern border. Earlier this month, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the urgency of this initiative, declaring that Europe must respond to the concerns of its Baltic allies by constructing a robust drone defense system. She described this effort not just as a lofty ambition but as foundational to a credible defense strategy. Von der Leyen outlined a vision for a collaborative European capability, one that is developed, deployed, and maintained collectively to ensure real-time response capabilities. She assured lawmakers that Europe is committed to defending its territory, stating, 'Europe will defend every inch of its territory.' Additionally, she announced that 6 billion euros (approximately $7 billion) would be allocated to form a drone alliance with Ukraine, whose forces have been leveraging drones to cause significant losses to Russian military assets.
