This anti-drone technology is used on the Ukrainian battlefield and in NATO airspace after flyovers

In a facility located over 1,500 kilometers from Kyiv, Denmark is at the forefront of developing cutting-edge anti-drone technology. Workers in Aalborg are assembling devices intended for export to Ukraine, aiming to disrupt Russian drone operations on the battlefield. Meanwhile, European nations are increasingly concerned about unidentified drones breaching NATO airspace, prompting a surge in demand for counter-drone solutions. Two Danish companies, traditionally focused on defense, are now experiencing a significant uptick in clients. These clients include airports, military bases, and critical infrastructure facilities, all of which have faced drone incursions in recent weeks. Weibel Scientific, known for its radar detection systems, played a crucial role during a recent EU summit in Copenhagen, where drone sightings led to the closure of the airport's airspace for hours. MyDefence, another key player, specializes in handheld devices that disrupt the communication link between drones and their operators, effectively neutralizing potential threats. Despite strict regulations surrounding jamming technology in the EU, such practices are prevalent on the battlefields of Ukraine. The conflict has seen both Russia and Ukraine adapt by deploying drones that either rely on fiber-optic cables or utilize additional antennas to evade jamming efforts. Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, drone warfare has escalated dramatically, with attacks targeting infrastructure throughout Ukraine and retaliatory strikes deep into Russian territory. As drone incidents within NATO airspace reached unprecedented levels in September, European leaders convened and agreed on strategies to establish a comprehensive “drone wall” to enhance detection and interception capabilities along their borders. NATO military officials recently announced the deployment of a new American anti-drone system to bolster defenses on the eastern flank, amidst concerns that Russia may be testing NATO's readiness. The challenges of detecting drones, often mistaken for birds or aircraft, continue to pose significant hurdles. Andreas Graae, an assistant professor at the Royal Danish Defense College, emphasized the urgency for Europe to deploy effective counter-drone systems in light of ongoing threats. MyDefence's CEO Dan Hermansen noted that the Russia-Ukraine war has been a pivotal moment for the company, highlighting the critical need for drone safety measures across Europe. With over 2,000 units of their “Wingman” detector dispatched to Ukraine since the conflict began, MyDefence has seen a remarkable increase in interest from various sectors, including law enforcement and infrastructure protection. Recent drone flyovers have served as a wake-up call for many European nations, shifting the perception that drone warfare is confined to Ukraine. In response to these threats, Denmark, Poland, and Romania are integrating advanced systems like the Merops, a compact anti-drone solution capable of using artificial intelligence to navigate and intercept unmanned aerial vehicles effectively. This initiative aims to fortify the border with Russia, deterring potential incursions. Weibel Scientific, a veteran in radar technology, has pivoted to drone detection, securing its largest order ever, valued at $76 million. As demand escalates for drone detection solutions, the company’s advancements are poised to play a critical role in any future protective measures against aerial threats.
