EU says it will continue rolling out AI legislation on schedule

On Friday, the European Union reaffirmed its commitment to the scheduled implementation of its groundbreaking AI legislation, amidst significant pressure from over a hundred technology firms seeking to delay its rollout. Major players in the tech sector, including Alphabet, Meta, Mistral AI, and ASML, have voiced concerns that the AI Act could undermine Europe's competitiveness in the rapidly advancing field of artificial intelligence. European Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier made it clear that there would be no delays, stating, "Let me be as clear as possible, there is no stop the clock. There is no grace period. There is no pause." The AI Act is designed as a risk-based regulatory framework targeting various applications of AI. It outright bans certain "unacceptable risk" practices, such as cognitive manipulation and social scoring. Furthermore, the legislation categorizes several uses of AI as "high-risk," including biometric systems and facial recognition technologies, especially in sensitive sectors like education and employment. To operate within the EU market, app developers will be required to register their systems and adhere to strict risk and quality management standards. Additionally, AI applications classified as "limited risk," such as chatbots, will face lighter transparency requirements. The rollout of the AI Act began last year, with full implementation expected by mid-2026, marking a significant step in the EU's regulatory approach to artificial intelligence.
