In a significant regulatory move, European Union authorities have imposed a hefty fine of 120 million euros on Elon Musk's social media platform, X, due to violations of the bloc's digital laws. This decision follows an extensive investigation that began two years ago, focusing on the platform's adherence to the Digital Services Act (DSA), which aims to enhance user protection and curb harmful content across EU platforms. The European Commission's ruling highlights three specific areas where X failed to meet transparency standards set by the DSA. The platform, which was formerly known as Twitter, has come under scrutiny for the design of its blue checkmarks, which regulators claim could mislead users and expose them to potential scams. Additionally, X has not sufficiently complied with the requirements surrounding its advertising database, which is intended to provide transparency about digital ads and their funding sources. Regulators have criticized the platform for implementing design features that hinder access to its ad database, citing excessive delays in processing data requests and creating unnecessary barriers for researchers. Henna Virkunnen, the EU's executive vice-president responsible for tech sovereignty, security, and democracy, remarked that misleading users, obscuring information, and restricting research access are unacceptable practices in the EU's digital landscape. As the platform faces this substantial fine, it remains to be seen how the situation will evolve, particularly in light of ongoing tensions between U.S. tech companies and EU regulatory frameworks.
