Europe could force Google to open Android to other AI assistants

In January, the European Commission launched an investigation into Google's integration of artificial intelligence within the Android operating system. Following this inquiry, the Commission has concluded that Android must become more accessible to various AI assistants, a decision that aligns with expectations. Google has responded to the findings, labeling the investigation as an "unwarranted intervention." However, the Commission appears poised to mandate changes to Android's AI framework by this summer. This push is a direct consequence of the Digital Markets Act (DMA), a significant regulation aimed at ensuring fair competition among major tech companies designated as "gatekeepers." Despite Google's ongoing opposition to the DMA regulations, these companies, including Google, have been under the law's scrutiny for several years, making it unlikely that the Commission will relent. A primary concern revolves around the preferential treatment that Google's own AI system, Gemini, receives on Android devices. When users power on any Google-branded Android phone, Gemini is pre-installed and given priority access at the system level. The Commission is particularly focused on the limited opportunities available for third-party AI applications on Android. It argues that too many features are exclusive to Google’s Gemini, and as a key player in the market, Google must adapt its practices. Henna Virkkunen, the Commission’s Vice President for Tech Sovereignty, emphasized the importance of interoperability in the rapidly advancing AI landscape. She stated, "These measures will open up Android devices to a wider range of AI services, allowing users to select the AI solutions that best fit their preferences and needs, without compromising on functionality."
