In a decisive move to enhance the security of telecommunications across Europe, the European Commission is advocating for the removal of equipment from Chinese technology firms Huawei and ZTE from 5G and future networks. This initiative has been reported by Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the matter. The push to eliminate these 'high-risk' vendors stems from a recommendation made by the Commission in 2020. Henna Virkkunen, the Commission's vice president, is now striving to transform this guidance into binding regulations. This would likely compel EU member states to adhere more closely to the Commission's security protocols. Should these recommendations be enacted as law, countries that fail to comply may face infringement proceedings and potential financial penalties. Virkkunen is particularly focused on limiting the involvement of Chinese companies in fiber network projects, coinciding with a broader initiative aimed at accelerating broadband deployment across the continent. This regulatory push reflects a growing concern over China's influence in vital infrastructure, especially as diplomatic relations between the EU and China continue to deteriorate. Last year, Germany announced plans to prohibit the use of critical components from Huawei and ZTE starting in 2026. Additionally, Finland is reportedly considering expanding its ban on Huawei technology in 5G networks. The United States has been proactive in encouraging its European allies, including the U.K. and Sweden, to restrict or eliminate Huawei equipment, citing risks of cyber-espionage and the potential disruption of essential communications.
