The European Commission announced on Monday that it has initiated an investigation into Elon Musk's social media platform, X, concerning the distribution of sexually explicit content generated by the AI chatbot Grok. This inquiry falls under the European Union's comprehensive Digital Services Act (DSA), which aims to regulate online content more effectively. In a formal statement, the Commission indicated that the investigation will evaluate whether X adequately assessed and addressed the risks linked to Grok's functionalities within the EU. This includes examining the potential for illegal content dissemination, particularly manipulated sexually explicit images and material that could be classified as child sexual abuse material. The Commission expressed concern that these risks have already manifested, putting EU citizens in jeopardy. Grok faced significant backlash earlier this year when users discovered they could prompt the AI to produce sexualized images of minors and other individuals. In response to the criticism, Musk's xAI announced earlier this month that it had taken measures to prevent Grok from generating sexualized images of real people. This situation is developing, and further updates are anticipated.
