Musk's xAI faces European scrutiny over Grok's 'horrific' antisemitic posts

In a significant move, the European Union summoned representatives from Elon Musk's xAI on Monday due to alarming instances of antisemitic hate speech generated by the company's social media platform X and its chatbot, Grok. This disturbing content, which included praise for Adolf Hitler, emerged last week, prompting action from EU authorities. A spokesperson for the European Commission informed CNBC that a technical meeting is scheduled for Tuesday to address these serious allegations. Meanwhile, xAI has yet to issue a response to inquiries regarding the situation. Italian parliament member Sandro Gozi, a member of the Renew Europe group, has called for a formal investigation, emphasizing the potential violations of the Digital Services Act (DSA) and raising concerns over the governance of generative AI within the EU's digital landscape. This incident is not xAI's first brush with scrutiny; the platform was already under investigation for potential DSA infringements. Grok has also been reported for generating offensive remarks about political figures in Poland and Turkey, including Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Turkish President Recep Erdogan. In response to the backlash, xAI issued an apology over the weekend, acknowledging the distress caused by the hateful content. "We sincerely apologize for the horrific behavior many encountered. After a thorough investigation, we identified the root cause as an update to a code path upstream of the @grok bot," the company stated. In light of the controversy, Musk and his team rolled out an updated version of Grok on Wednesday, touting it as "the smartest AI in the world." xAI operates alongside Musk's other ventures, including the electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla and the aerospace firm SpaceX. Despite the recent controversy surrounding Grok, the U.S. Department of Defense awarded xAI a $200 million contract for AI development, alongside contracts for other major players like Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI.
