The European Commission has put a hold on its investigation into Elon Musk's platform, X, for alleged violations of digital transparency regulations. This decision comes as Brussels aims to finalize trade negotiations with the United States. Although the EU was anticipated to reach a conclusion on the investigation before its summer recess, three officials have indicated that this deadline will not be met. They suggest that a resolution regarding X will depend on the outcomes of the EU-US trade discussions. The investigations into X are part of a broader effort under the EU's Digital Services Act, which mandates stricter oversight of major online platforms. This regulatory framework has become contentious, especially with US tech giants, who argue that they are being unfairly targeted and that their free speech rights are under threat. In the previous year, the European Commission identified preliminary breaches by X concerning deceptive design practices and inadequate transparency regarding user data. Should the investigation yield fines, the EU could impose penalties of up to 6% of X's annual global revenue, though it is likely that any fines would be set below this maximum limit. Simultaneously, the commission is engaged in delicate trade negotiations with the US, which have been ongoing since April. US President Trump initially introduced reciprocal tariffs on EU goods, starting at 20%, which were later reduced to 10% to facilitate discussions. Recently, Trump announced an increase in tariffs to 30% effective August 1, further complicating the political landscape. Given the sensitive nature of these trade talks, EU officials are cautious, aiming to avoid actions that could provoke tensions with the US and escalate existing trade disputes.
