These are the 3 soft skills you need in the AI era

As artificial intelligence continues to take over monotonous tasks, the need for soft skills in the workplace is becoming increasingly crucial. In fields ranging from engineering to customer service, the ability to connect with others and collaborate effectively can significantly enhance job performance and career prospects. Prashanthi Padmanabhan, LinkedIn's VP of Engineering for Talent Solutions, emphasizes that skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork are now more important than ever. While some may feel pressure to become more sociable, it’s essential to understand that soft skills can provide a distinct edge in an AI-driven work environment, where human interaction remains irreplaceable. Experts from various sectors, including LinkedIn, IBM, and Cisco, have identified several key soft skills that will be vital as AI technologies evolve. Michael Housman, founder of AI-ccelerator, points out that even with AI's assistance, employees must possess the ability to frame the right questions and identify pertinent issues. Job seekers are encouraged to develop complex problem-solving skills that allow them to navigate challenges with unclear parameters and outcomes. Guy Diedrich, Cisco's senior vice president, highlights the importance of critical thinking as companies face rapid advancements in AI that raise ethical dilemmas. He believes that being able to ask pertinent questions will be a critical human skill. Meanwhile, Alex King, managing director at ExpandIQ, notes that self-awareness and emotional intelligence will be increasingly significant. Recognizing when to engage or withdraw in a conversation can set individuals apart in an AI-dominated landscape. Ruchir Puri, chief scientist at IBM, adds that while intelligence is important, successful leaders often excel in emotional and relational skills. He advises practicing empathy and ensuring clear communication, as conveying ideas understandably is paramount in a collaborative environment. With AI handling more routine tasks, executives foresee a shift towards deeper, more creative work. Jeetu Patel, Cisco's CPO, suggests that as the demand for innovative thinking increases, imagination may become the primary constraint in product development. Terri Horton, an AI strategy consultant, echoes this sentiment, urging professionals to leverage their creativity not just in job performance but also in reimagining roles affected by AI. Candidates are advised to showcase their creativity during job interviews. Padmanabhan encourages those without formal coding experience to bring their ideas to life, demonstrating their innovative potential. As the workplace continues to evolve, developing these essential soft skills will be key to thriving in the AI era.
