Too burned out to travel? This new app fakes your summer vacation photos for you

In an era where the relentless hustle of startup culture is back in vogue, a new app has emerged that offers a surreal solution for those feeling burnt out: generating artificial vacation photos. Endless Summer, developed by Laurent Del Rey, a product designer who recently joined Meta’s Superintelligence Lab, allows users to create realistic images of themselves enjoying idyllic summer getaways, all from the comfort of their homes. The app, available for iPhone, allows users to pose in stunning locations like beach towns or scenic European vistas, showcasing a lifestyle that's far removed from discussions about work or stress. Del Rey described the motivation behind Endless Summer, stating, "When burnout hits and you need to manifest the soft life you deserve, this app is for you." Del Rey's inspiration stems from his love of summer and the joy it brings. He wanted to capture that essence in a digital format, creating a user-friendly interface where users can tap a button to generate their own personalized summer snapshots. The photos, which appear in a camera roll-style layout, feature an AI-crafted version of the user enjoying various activities, giving a sense of contentment. Powered by Gemini’s Nano-Banana image model, the app efficiently generates diverse vacation images. Users should be aware, however, that while it offers a free trial for the first six photos, further use requires payment. Pricing options include $3.99 for 30 images, $17.99 for 150, and $34.99 for 300, making it accessible for those curious about this innovative way of personal imagery. Additionally, Endless Summer introduces a fun twist with the option to create themed Halloween photos, allowing users to explore costume ideas. The app's vintage film aesthetic adds a nostalgic touch, reminiscent of casual lifestyle photography trends from the mid-2000s, catering to the growing desire for less curated and more authentic life representations. As AI continues to blur the lines between reality and digital creation, Endless Summer stands out as a playful yet thought-provoking tool for those yearning for a break from their daily routines.
