Scott Galloway says your kids need these skills to AI-proof their future careers

In today's rapidly evolving job market, parents are increasingly seeking ways to prepare their children for a future influenced by artificial intelligence. Scott Galloway, an entrepreneur turned academic, emphasizes the importance of nurturing skills that will withstand technological advancements. During a recent episode of "The Diary of a CEO" podcast, he shared insights on the competencies that will hold the most significance in the years ahead. Reflecting on past educational trends, Galloway noted that a decade ago, many private schools heavily invested in teaching Mandarin and computer science, believing these subjects would provide students with a competitive edge. However, he questioned the effectiveness of this approach, stating, "How's that worked out? 'Thank god my kid knows Mandarin,' said nobody right now." Instead, Galloway advocates for prioritizing storytelling as a crucial skill for the younger generation. He describes storytelling as the ability to analyze data, craft a compelling narrative, and communicate effectively across various platforms. According to him, successful leaders, including Jeff Bezos and Jensen Huang, exemplify this skill through their engaging presentations and communications. Moreover, Galloway highlights the increasing importance of interpersonal relationships in the workplace. He argues that amidst competition from multiple firms, the ability to connect with others will be essential. "At the end of the day, I have three different law firms pitching me business, three different investment banks, three different CRM companies. Who do I have the best relationship with, and who do I want to work with?" he remarked. A foundational understanding of the sciences is also part of Galloway's recommended skill set. While technical skills like coding are still relevant, he points out that soft skills are becoming increasingly vital. LinkedIn's CEO, Ryan Roslansky, echoes this sentiment, emphasizing human-centered skills such as curiosity, courage, communication, and compassion in the age of AI. Galloway also cautions that young people, particularly young men, may be losing the ability to cope with rejection. He stresses the importance of resilience, advising that the capacity to endure 'no' is a critical skill to develop. Ultimately, he encourages parents to support their children in cultivating skills like effective writing and interpersonal communication, while also guiding them to discover their true strengths, rather than merely pushing them toward trending fields.
