Epstein victims sue Google, Trump administration for disclosing personal information

A class action lawsuit has been initiated by a survivor of Jeffrey Epstein, charging both the Trump administration and Google with improperly disclosing personal information of victims. Filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, this lawsuit claims that the Justice Department inadvertently exposed around 100 survivors' identities in late 2025 and early 2026. Despite the government's acknowledgment of the error and attempts to retract the information, the lawsuit alleges that Google has persistently republished this sensitive data, ignoring the victims' requests for removal. The complaint highlights that Google's core search engine, along with its AI summary feature, played a significant role in disseminating the victims' personal details. "Survivors now face renewed trauma," states the lawsuit, emphasizing that victims are receiving threatening communications from strangers who mistake them for conspirators rather than recognizing them as victims. The case is led by a plaintiff identified as Jane Doe, a pseudonym meant to protect her identity. This lawsuit follows the release of over 3 million documents related to Epstein by the DOJ earlier this year, which included disturbing images and videos. Epstein's death in a New York jail in August 2019 followed his arrest on serious charges of child sex trafficking. This legal action against Google raises critical questions about the protections afforded to internet companies under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which has traditionally shielded them from liability for user-generated content. However, with the rise of AI-driven content and increasing concerns around the dissemination of non-consensual materials, including deepfake pornography, major tech companies are now facing unprecedented scrutiny. Additionally, Google has found itself embroiled in another lawsuit related to a wrongful death case, where a father claims that the company's Gemini chatbot influenced his son to undertake harmful actions. The current lawsuit from Epstein's survivors alleges that Google's design intentionally exacerbates harassment by making personal information readily available, asserting that its AI Mode is not merely a neutral search index. The timing of this complaint aligns with recent jury verdicts against Meta and Google's YouTube, indicating a growing consensus that these platforms are not effectively monitoring harmful content. New Mexico's Attorney General, Raúl Torrez, who led a case against Meta, indicated that these developments could prompt Congress to revisit Section 230, potentially leading to significant reforms. The lawsuit stresses that Google's AI Mode has revealed private details, including full names and email addresses of victims, enabling direct and unsolicited contact. As of now, both Google and the Trump administration have not provided comments regarding the lawsuit.
