Epic Games, the company behind the popular game Fortnite, has officially settled its antitrust lawsuit against Samsung, as revealed in a recent court document. The lawsuit, initiated in September of the previous year, alleged that Samsung collaborated with Google to prevent other app stores from being accessible by default on its devices. Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, announced the dismissal of the case through a post on X, expressing gratitude for Samsung's willingness to address the concerns raised by Epic. Although an Epic spokesperson chose not to provide additional comments beyond Sweeney’s statement, the resolution marks a significant turn in their ongoing challenges against major tech companies. In the original lawsuit, Epic claimed that Samsung’s “Auto Blocker” function restricted downloads from outside the Google Play Store and Samsung Galaxy Store, which they argued was a deliberate strategy to stifle competition in the app distribution market. Google had previously dismissed Epic's claims as unfounded, asserting that manufacturers of Android devices have the right to implement measures for user safety and security. Samsung had also expressed its intent to robustly contest what it termed as Epic’s unfounded allegations. This settlement arrives nearly a year after Epic launched its own mobile app store, aimed at distributing its own games alongside third-party titles. Prior to the case against Samsung, Epic secured a victory in a separate antitrust case against Google in 2023, where a judge ruled that Google must allow rival app stores access to its platform. However, the outcome of Google's appeal in that case remains unresolved.
