Lawsuit: EPA revoking greenhouse gas finding risks “thousands of avoidable deaths”

A coalition of over a dozen environmental and health organizations has filed a lawsuit against the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), claiming that the agency's recent repeal of an 'endangerment finding' endangers public health. This finding has been pivotal in shaping federal climate change regulations for the past 17 years. The lawsuit, which includes prominent groups such as the American Public Health Association, the American Lung Association, and the Sierra Club, urges the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit to reassess the EPA's decision. This ruling also rescinded essential controls on greenhouse gas emissions from new vehicles, prompting concerns about a potential increase in pollution levels. The plaintiffs argue that the Trump administration's actions reflect a disregard for scientific evidence and favor fossil fuel interests at the expense of public health. Legal director Meredith Hankins from the Natural Resources Defense Council stated, "Undercutting the ability of the federal government to tackle the largest source of climate pollution is deadly serious." Despite the Trump administration's attempts to downplay climate science, the coalition insists that the dangers of unchecked pollution are well-documented. They highlight how rising temperatures have contributed to severe weather events, including floods, droughts, and wildfires. In a recent statement, the EPA claimed its final rule represents the most extensive deregulation in U.S. history, promising a savings of over $1.3 trillion by 2055. The agency suggested that car manufacturers would pass on savings from the removal of emissions requirements, thereby making cars more affordable for consumers. Critics argue this stance prioritizes economic interests over environmental protection, with the EPA framing its mission as one of consumer choice rather than climate action.
