Elon Musk’s xAI faces fresh opposition after landing permit for Mississippi power plant

Elon Musk's xAI, a subsidiary of SpaceX, is encountering significant opposition from environmental organizations in Mississippi. These groups are taking legal action against the company's proposal to construct a large methane gas power plant in Southaven. Organizations such as the NAACP, Young, Gifted & Green, and the Safe and Sound Coalition are urging state officials to retract the permit granted to xAI by Mississippi's environmental regulator last month. The local residents, represented by these nonprofits, express concerns that the planned power plant will exacerbate the area's existing ozone issues. In a petition submitted to the state, the groups' legal representatives stated that the facility would lead to "significant increases in pollutants like nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter," ultimately jeopardizing air quality and public health. The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality approved the permit on March 10, allowing xAI to permanently install 41 natural gas turbines in DeSoto County to support its nearby data centers. Currently, xAI operates the Colossus 2 data center in Memphis, Tennessee, and is in the process of developing a new facility named Macrohardrrr in Southaven. Musk aims to leverage the Memphis region as a central hub for xAI's expansion, competing against industry leaders like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google in the rapidly growing AI sector. In February, SpaceX acquired xAI in a deal that set the combined valuation at an impressive $1.25 trillion, with expectations of a record initial public offering on the horizon. However, there is growing apprehension among communities across the U.S. regarding the financial and environmental implications of the power-intensive infrastructure necessary for AI innovations. The Southern Environmental Law Center is representing the opposing groups, who argue that xAI's local branch, MZX Tech LLC, and the state did not utilize accurate pollution assessments during the permitting process. They also claim that xAI was not mandated to opt for the most environmentally friendly turbines or to procure offsets for its emissions. Moreover, the groups allege that local stakeholders were excluded from essential discussions, and government emails indicated that the permitting process was expedited under pressure from xAI. The permit acquired by xAI, known as a Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD) permit, is a federal standard aimed at maintaining air quality from major pollution sources such as power plants. Typically, these permits involve extensive communication between the Environmental Protection Agency, state officials, and the public over several years. As of now, xAI has not offered any comments in response to the unfolding situation. Meanwhile, the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality confirmed that it had acknowledged the request for an evidentiary hearing regarding the permit, allowing xAI the opportunity to participate in the proceedings.
