Apple and Google are set to introduce a highly anticipated update that enables users of both Android and iPhone devices to send end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) messages via Rich Communication Services (RCS). Currently in beta, this new feature enhances traditional SMS texting by offering improved capabilities such as advanced media sharing, typing indicators, read receipts, and better group chat functionalities. With the implementation of end-to-end encryption, RCS messages will now offer a higher level of privacy and security. This means that only the sender and the intended recipient will have access to the content of the messages, effectively preventing unauthorized third parties from intercepting or reading them. The rollout is targeted at iPhone users operating on iOS 26.5 with compatible carriers, as well as Android users utilizing the latest version of Google Messages. Apple highlighted the collaborative efforts with Google, stating, "Apple and Google have led a cross-industry initiative to incorporate end-to-end encryption into Rich Communication Services (RCS), thereby enhancing the security and privacy of this cross-platform messaging system that supersedes traditional SMS." End-to-end encryption is a vital component of digital communications, ensuring that messages can only be read by the sender and the receiver. As messages travel between devices, they are encrypted, making it challenging for hackers, governmental bodies, telecom companies, or even the platforms themselves to access user communications. Previously, while both Apple and Google provided E2EE for their respective messaging services, cross-platform messaging between iPhone and Android was not encrypted—this update now addresses that gap. The collaboration between Apple, Google, and the GSM Association (GSMA) aims to standardize RCS messaging with end-to-end encryption as part of the RCS Universal Profile 3.0. This new encryption framework is powered by the Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol. Furthermore, the update will also introduce several modern messaging features, including the ability to edit and delete sent messages, support for tapback reactions, and inline replies to specific messages in the chat environment.
