After Ukrainian testing, drone detection radar doubles range with simple software patch

In the context of the ongoing conflict, Russia has escalated its use of drones and missiles against Ukraine, launching aggressive waves of attacks over the past few years. Recently, the frequency of these assaults has surged, with Ukraine facing nightly barrages that can exceed 700 drones. In a concerning development, Russia reportedly sent at least 19 drones into Poland, prompting NATO forces to intervene and shoot down some of these unmanned aerial vehicles. Many of these drones are of the Shahed/Geran type, utilizing technology sourced from Iran. They have recently been modified to reach higher altitudes, complicating interception efforts. The low production costs of these drones—estimated to be just a few tens of thousands of dollars—complicate the response strategy. Engaging them with costly multimillion-dollar missiles from conventional air defense systems is inefficient and could quickly deplete missile inventories. In response, Ukraine has implemented extensive electronic warfare tactics designed to disrupt the drones' control systems and navigation. For drones that are not diverted from their course, Ukraine employs mobile anti-aircraft guns, fighter aircraft, and interceptor drones, often launched from mobile units that operate throughout the night. Timely detection of incoming drones is vital for these teams; even a few seconds can be the difference between successfully relocating and launching a countermeasure or being caught off guard as a drone passes overhead on its way to its target.
