Rough to “energy dominance” after GOP kneecaps wind and solar

In a recent development in U.S. energy legislation, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act has made its way through Congress, with proponents celebrating what they believe to be a significant advancement in American energy policy. Mike Sommers, President and CEO of the American Petroleum Institute, hailed the bill's passage, asserting that it bolsters President Trump's vision of energy dominance. Republican lawmakers, including Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Iowa and Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Rep. Brett Guthrie of Kentucky, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the bill's role in achieving what they term 'energy dominance.' This concept, which gained traction during Trump's first term, is somewhat nebulous but generally encompasses goals like increasing domestic energy production, lowering costs, and reducing dependence on foreign energy sources. The phrase has become a rallying point for Trump's supporters. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin stated in the Washington Examiner that the administration is ensuring America's energy future, likening it to the foundational efforts of the nation’s Founding Fathers. He argued that energy dominance not only powers homes and businesses but also fuels what he calls the Great American Comeback. However, not all experts share this optimistic view. Critics are concerned that the bill's provisions, particularly those that cut funding for wind and solar energy initiatives, could hinder progress toward energy dominance. As electricity demand continues to rise, these cuts may restrict the country's capacity to expand its energy generation, potentially leading to higher consumer prices and diminishing the U.S.'s leadership role in the global clean energy movement.
