Endurance Energy raises $54M to harness a massive untapped energy source

Andrew Redd, a former engineer at SpaceX, is embarking on a groundbreaking venture to tap into geothermal energy located deep beneath the ocean. His startup, Endurance Energy, has successfully raised $54 million in a Series A funding round, with Founders Fund leading the investment alongside notable participants like Point72 Ventures and Felicis Ventures. Redd’s mission is fueled by a desire to address the growing demand for renewable energy amidst the surge in energy needs from AI data centers and electric vehicles. Since its establishment last year, Endurance Energy has expanded to a team of 25, with a significant number coming from SpaceX. The concept of geothermal energy is not novel; it has been harnessed for centuries in various forms. However, Redd believes there is immense untapped potential in the oceanic regions. He emphasizes that any future energy solution must be renewable and sustainable. "That’s my non-negotiable," he states, advocating for energy sources that provide reliable 24/7 power. Redd considers geothermal energy the only viable option that meets these criteria, questioning why it currently accounts for only 0.4% of the energy supply in the U.S. Existing geothermal startups often drill deep into the Earth's crust, but Redd is looking to the oceans, where tectonic activity creates opportunities for harnessing heat from magma. Operating at considerable ocean depths presents challenges, including the necessity for robotics and materials resilient to both pressure and corrosion. However, Redd is confident, citing the oil and gas industry's extensive experience in deep-sea operations. Endurance's geothermal projects could potentially be located miles offshore in geologically rich areas around the Pacific, known as the Ring of Fire. The optimization of these sites will be crucial, balancing the cost of underwater infrastructure against the available geothermal resources. Should Endurance successfully tap into even a small fraction of the geothermal energy estimated at 6 terawatts in the Ring of Fire, it could significantly contribute to the energy needs of major coastal cities in that region, a prospect Redd finds promising as the world grapples with its energy demands.
